3. Boris & Gleb
Boris and Gleb are the youngest sons of the Tsar – Vladimir of Kiev. They were murdered by their half brother Svjatopolk in a power struggle. Even though it was a political murder, the brothers were declared holy in 1071, because their non-violent acceptance of their undeserved fate was seen as a reflection of the suffering of Christ. They were guardian angels of the chevaliers and their horses and are often portrayed with horses and always in Russian garments.

13. St. Laurus and St Florus
Icon from north russia.
Very popular among horse keepers as well as horse breeders,
as this icon protects the animals against disease.
Feast day on August 18th.
On the icon the brothers Lauros and Florus receive the bridles of two elegant horses, from
archangel Michael. The three servants of the two are also depicted. Speusippes (= horse gardian),
Eleusippes (=horse herder) and Meleusippus (he who catches black horses).
Lauros and Florus were stonecutters, who were ordered to build a temple .
They converted the workers and dedicated the building to Christ.
For this they and the helpers were killed. The bodies were thrown in a dry well. Years later the people investigated how it was possible that horses came to drink from a dry well. They found the bodies of the brothers. The horses who drank from the well, were protected from diseases.
In Russia people still take the horses to rivers on the 18th of August. After the water is being blessed, they bathe the horses in the river and let them drink from it. So thay may be protected and live in good health.
